Good food for good causes

In London alone, it’s estimated that at least 100,000 people live in food poverty. The Felix Project is a charity that wants to see good food go to good causes. It works with food suppliers, schools and charities across London to reduce food waste and food poverty.

“We collect food from supermarkets, wholesalers and other food suppliers – food that is fresh and nutritious, but cannot be sold for various reasons.”

The Felix Project then delivers that food free of charge to a range of charities and schools across London who provide meals, snacks or food parcels for their clients, who include the elderly, the homeless, those with mental health issues, refugees, asylum seekers. families and children.

Felix Project Schools Programme

According to a UNICEF report from 2017, 19% of children under 15 in the UK live with adults who struggle to provide food. Children who go to school hungry find it harder to focus in class which can lead to poor academic performance. Since 2017, the Felix Project’s Schools Programme has been collecting surplus food from bakers, wholesalers, farms, supermarkets and other retail outlets to redistribute to schools, so parents can create nutritious meals for their children.

The Felix Project operates a free service to primary schools across London, delivering a minimum of five crates of produce per school every week that would otherwise end up as food waste. The food comes from high quality establishments and it may have been rejected for minor defects to its packaging or not be the desired shape or size.  Some items may be past their best before but are not past their use by date. Grundig has donated fridges to schools in the programme to help them store fresh foods for longer. Parents and teachers volunteer on the school’s market stall to distribute the goods to all families who wish to take part and each family is given a paper bag to fill up with fresh produce. In addition, The Felix Project delivers assemblies to the schools to increase awareness of food waste and its environmental impact.
